NHL Game Summary - Toronto at Atlanta

Final Score: Toronto 2 - Atlanta 1

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Mikhail Grabovski scored 39 seconds into overtime to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 2-1 victory over the playoff hopeful Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena.

Grabovski scored when he tipped in a point shot from defenseman Dion Phaneuf while skating horizontally across the ice just in front of the crease. Despite having a defender draped all over him, Grabovski's redirection found its way past Atlanta netminder Ondrej Pavelec.

"I didn't think (Grabovski) would have a good game," said Toronto head coach Ron Wilson. "And within 10 seconds (of overtime) he deflected that puck in. We're playing a team that really needs the points, and I'm sure (they were) scoreboard watching."

Phil Kessel tallied in regulation for the Leafs, who have won seven of nine despite being all but out of the playoff chase. Jonas Gustavsson made 19 stops to record his 15th victory of the season.

Zach Bogosian netted the Thrashers' only goal of the game as Atlanta lost its second straight following a four-game win streak. Atlanta earned one point, though, for losing in overtime and now stands just two points behind Boston for the final playoff spot in the East. The Bruins lost to Tampa Bay on Thursday.

Pavelec stopped 28-of-30 shots in defeat.

"Obviously, this is going to sit with us for a little bit," said Atlanta forward Jim Slater. "It could have been a game that we had. We've got to get as many points as we can now. Tonight, we needed to get two points against a team that is lower than we are in the standings. We didn't come through with what we wanted."

Both regulation goals occurred in the first period, with Atlanta opening the scoring. With the Thrashers skating on the power play, Bogosian took a Rich Peverley pass at the top of the slot and fired a one-timer through traffic and Gustavsson at 10:40.

Just 1:05 later, Toronto equalized the score. Nikolai Kulemin skated down the left side of the ice and sneaked a pass through two defenders to Kessel, who was all alone and chipped the puck over a sprawled-out Pavelec.

Atlanta had a power play early in the second period but could not convert, and Gustavsson stopped all eight Thrasher shots in the frame to keep the score tied. Pavelec made six saves in the second and 12 more in the third to help send the game to overtime.
