Final Score: Colorado 2 - Phoenix 6
Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Lee Stempniak registered a pair of third- period goals and added an assist, as Phoenix celebrated its first playoff berth since 2002 with a 6-2 win over Colorado.
Wojtek Wolski, Taylor Pyatt, Derek Morris and Vernon Fiddler also lit the lamp for the Coyotes, who had clinched the berth when Calgary lost to Boston in regulation earlier Saturday; Phoenix made a good showing anyway to reach the 100-point mark for the first time since the franchise came to the NHL as the Winnipeg Jets in 1979.
"It's special for us as a team," Coyotes forward Shane Doan said. "Obviously there was a lot of doubts coming into this season by a lot of people. It's nice to answer those doubts."
Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 27-of-29 shots for his 40th win of the season.
Kevin Porter and Milan Hejduk scored for the Avalanche, who have dropped four of five and slipped into eighth place in the Western Conference after Detroit nipped Nashville in a shootout. The Wings hold a two-point edge over the Avs.
Craig Anderson allowed five goals on 31 shots in defeat.
Stempniak put the home team ahead 4-2 when he ripped a shot off the left post from a rush at the 4:56 mark of the third period, then pushed the Phoenix advantage to three on a power play with 3:23 left in regulation by sweeping in a loose puck from the crease.
"We can't be giving up odd-man rushes as frequently as we have. It's something we have to address," Colorado head coach Joe Sacco said.
Fiddler added a short-handed empty-netter with 1:32 to play to wrap up the milestone victory.
Both sides tallied in the first period only 1:40 apart, as Morris opened the scoring for Phoenix at 6:45 before Porter notched his first NHL goal at 8:25.
Wolski put the Coyotes back on top at 6:20 of the second, then Pyatt's hard shot made it 3-1 at 9:25.
Hejduk cut Colorado's deficit to one with his 22nd of the season at 19:27.
