NHL Game Summary - Florida at Ottawa

Final Score: Florida 2 - Ottawa 3

Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Daniel Alfredsson's power-play goal early in the third period proved to be the game-winner as the Ottawa Senators took a 3-2 win over the Florida Panthers at Scotiabank Place.

Matt Cullen and Peter Regin each had a goal while Erik Karlsson added three assists for the Senators, who have won their past four games. Brian Elliott stopped 20 shots in the win.

Ottawa has 87 points on the season and sits in the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference, five points back of Buffalo for first place in the Northeast Division. Buffalo, though, has two games in hand on Ottawa.

"I thought we were a little bit sluggish in the first period," said Ottawa head coach Cory Coulston. "We juggled the lines a little bit their in the second period and were able to make it work. Some of the guys who didn't play much last night got some more time tonight and they brought some energy."

Stephen Weiss and Steven Reinprecht each had a goal while Tomas Vokoun made 22 saves for the Panthers, who have dropped five of their last seven.

Florida stands at 71 points on the season and sits nine points back of Boston and Philadelphia for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with eight games to play.

Neither side scored in the first period as Vokoun stopped nine shots and Elliott made five saves.

Florida got on the board 6:59 into the second as Weiss got the puck along the left boards, skated out front and chipped in a backhand.

Ottawa, though, tied the game with 4:58 left in the second. A slap shot from Karlsson at the high slot was stopped, but the rebound was banged in by Cullen for his 15th goal of the season.

The Senators then took a 2-1 lead with 2:20 to play in the second when Regin's wrister found the back of the net for his 12th goal of the season.

Ottawa made it a 3-1 game 1:44 into the third on the power play when Alfredsson's slap shot from the left point sailed past Vokoun.

Florida cut its deficit to one with 6:46 to play on a 5-on-3 advantage. Cory Stillman sent a shot on net from a sharp angle at the left side that Elliott stopped, but Stillman got his own rebound and sent it out front for a one- timer from Reinprecht that got in.

The Panthers had another 5-on-3 a bit later, but were unable to tie it, and Ottawa kept the puck out of the net for the rest of the game to grab the win.
