Final Score: New Jersey 4 - Montreal 2
Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Dainius Zubrus was credited with the game- winner late in the second period, and Martin Brodeur stopped 25 shots, as New Jersey doubled up Montreal, 4-2, at Bell Centre.
Patrik Elias, Brian Rolston and Jamie Langenbrunner tallied for the Devils, who earned a playoff berth with the victory and tied Pittsburgh atop the Atlantic Division with 93 points.
"I thought it was one of our usual tight games, the way we hold onto the lead going through the 15-minute mark (of the second period)," said Brodeur. "It was a clinic out there early on. The guys controlled the puck, and we didn't give up any odd-man rushes."
Andrei Kostitsyn and Tomas Plekanec had the goals for the Canadiens, who have lost four of their last five games but remained in sixth place in the East, two points ahead of both Boston and Philadelphia.
Jaroslav Halak yielded three scores on 25 shots in defeat.
Zubrus put the Devils ahead by a 3-1 count when his redirection of a Paul Martin point shot slipped past a screened Halak at 15:19 of the second period.
Only 90 seconds later, however, a Kostitsyn pass redirected off Plekanec's skate for a one-goal contest after two.
Montreal peppered Brodeur for short stretches in the third period but failed to net an equalizer. Rolston cemented the win with an empty-net score in the final 10 seconds.
"I didn't think we won enough battles tonight. We could have been a little bit better," said Habs forward Mike Cammalleri. "Our compete level was very good, but I thought we should have been able to do more than that in this type of game at this time of year."
New Jersey gained a 2-0 edge thanks to a pair of power-play scores.
Elias' wrister gave the Devils the lead at 8:11 of the first period, then a turnaround slapshot from the slot by Langenbrunner put Jersey up by two at 1:59 of the second.
Kostitsyn tallied at 5:15 to halve Montreal's deficit.
