Final Score: NY Islanders 4 - Columbus 3
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Josh Bailey netted the game-winner at 2:58 of the extra period, as the Islanders posted a win in Columbus for the first time with a 4-3 win over the Blue Jackets.
The winner came as John Tavares slid the puck from the right to Bailey in the slot for the breakaway tally, as the Islanders moved within eight points of the Bruins and Flyers for the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with seven games left.
"Josh (Bailey) doesn't finish unless John (Tavares) makes that really good play to him," said Islanders coach Scott Gordon. "John is another guy, he probably could have had three goals tonight. The post got in the way. It's good to see both those guys coming up big for us."
Kyle Okposo, Sean Bergenheim and Jon Sim also scored for the Isles, who have won two in a row after losing three straight. Dwayne Roloson finished with 34 saves in the win.
R.J. Umberger, Rick Nash and Grant Clitsome all scored for Columbus, which lost for the third time in four games and were officially eliminated from playoff contention.
Mathieu Garon ended with 24 stops in defeat.
"I didn't like the way we started the game," said Blue Jackets coach Claude Noel. "We were slow to start. We picked it up in the second and third periods. The overtime goal for me was, well, I didn't like it. There were a lot of things wrong with it."
Okposo scored the game's opening goal at the 4:32 mark of the first period when Matt Moulson's shot slammed off the boards behind the net and came right back to Okposo's stick at the right circle for the easy put in and the 1-0 lead.
Just 1:02 later, Tim Jackman carried the puck from behind the net and blasted a turnaround slapper that was deflected by Bergenheim in the slot past Garon for the 2-0 edge.
Columbus pulled back into the game just 51 seconds into the second, when Umberger re-directed a Rick Nash slapshot from the right point for a power play tally that trickled past Roloson.
Roloson stopped a Blue Jackets opportunity late in the period, as he sprawled out to stop a shot from the right side of the net with his quick glove, preserving the 2-1 Isles lead into the third period.
The Blue Jackets tied the game 33 seconds into the third, though, when Antoine Vermette stole the puck in the Islanders' zone and fed it cross ice to Kristian Huselius, who passed to a wide open Nash in front for the easy goal.
Only 45 seconds later, Clitsome took control of a bouncing puck behind the left circle and lifted it past Roloson for the Blue Jackets first lead of the game at 3-2.
The Islanders quickly deflated Columbus' momentum when Sim, straddling the crease, took a pass from Jack Hillen and put it under the pads of Garon at 4:14.
