Final Score: Colorado 3 - San Jose 4
San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Devin Setoguchi scored San Jose's first and last goal, as the Western Conference-leading Sharks edged the slumping Colorado Avalanche, 4-3, at HP Pavilion.
Dan Boyle had a goal and an assist for the Sharks, who have won four in a row and hold a four-point lead on Phoenix for first in the Pacific Division and in the conference standings. The Blackhawks lost to Columbus on Sunday and now have 99 points.
Jed Ortmeyer also scored for San Jose, while Thomas Greiss made a career-high 42 saves. The Sharks picked up the victory without center Joe Thornton, who missed the contest due to a lower body injury.
"It's a change that we had to adjust to," Setoguchi said. "We've got a pretty deep team up front with our forwards. Hopefully he won't be out too long."
Peter Mueller had two goals for the Avalanche, who have dropped two straight and five of six and are now just four points ahead of the Flames for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West. Calgary beat Washington on Sunday.
"The ball's in our court still," Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said. "We can control our destiny. We don't have to worry about other teams."
Kevin Porter also lit the lamp for Colorado, which got 28 saves from Craig Anderson. The Avs remain five points behind idle Vancouver for first in the Northwest Division.
With the score tied at 3-3 in the third, Setoguchi lit the lamp with 5:49 remaining to put the Sharks ahead. Joe Pavelski's shot from the right point hit off the skate of Setoguchi and went into the net. A review confirmed that Setoguchi did not kick the disc in with his skate and the goal was upheld.
Greiss was sensational down the stretch, making one big save after another. He ended up with 11 stops in the final 20 minutes.
The Sharks drew first blood at the 10:51 mark of the first period. On the power play, Boyle fired a shot on net from the point that Setoguchi deflected in.
Colorado tied it at the 1:20 mark of the second. Cody McLeod's shot from the right circle set up a rebound in front for Porter, whose backhander found the back of the net.
Mueller's power-play goal with 7:18 left gave the Avalanche a 2-1 edge. Matt Duchene controlled the disc at the side of the net and slid a pass to the slot for Mueller, whose snap shot beat Greiss.
San Jose deadlocked the contest with 1:23 remaining in the middle stanza. Ortmeyer's shot from the left circle beat traffic in front and snuck past Anderson.
Boyle put the Sharks ahead 3-2 at the 4:32 mark of the third. Boyle threw a shot on net from the right circle that deflected off a Colorado player and into the net.
Mueller's second goal of the game at 9:03 made it a 3-3 contest. Kyle Cumiskey's slapper from the slot hit off the left post and settled in the crease. Mueller was right there to chip the loose puck across the line.
