NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Toronto

Final Score: Buffalo 2 - Toronto 4

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Luke Schenn was credited with the game-winning goal in the third period, as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Buffalo Sabres, 4-2, at Air Canada Centre.

Viktor Stalberg and Garnet Exelby also scored for the Maple Leafs, who cost the Sabres a chance at clinching the Northeast Division title. Jean- Sebastien Giguere stopped 22 shots for Toronto, which halted a two-game skid and has just four games remaining in its disappointing season.

"The goals we scored were the results of hard work," said Leafs head coach Ron Wilson. "You have to earn every goal."

Derek Roy and Steve Montador scored for Buffalo, which now sits five points ahead of the Ottawa Senators, who defeated Carolina later on Thursday night. The Sabres, who have five games remaining, can finish anywhere from second to fifth in the Eastern Conference playoff seeding.

Ryan Miller allowed three goals on 33 shots in the loss.

With the scored tied 2-2 in the third period, a shot from the right point was deflected by the stick of Schenn from the right circle. The speed and direction of the puck changed drastically and the disc found its way into the far side of the net past Miller, who never saw it and the Leafs led with 11:30 to play in regulation.

Buffalo managed only six total shots in the final stanza, and failed on its only power play chance in the period before Fredrik Sjostrom's empty-netter inside the final minute sealed the victory.

The teams traded goals in the first period. Midway through the opening stanza, the hosts made it 1-0 on Stalberg's eighth goal of the season. Tyler Bozak skated with the puck all the way down the right-wing side and then went behind the net. From the other side, near the lower left circle, Bozak passed into the slot to a wide open Stalberg, who easily lit the lamp with a wrister.

At the 12:46 mark, the Sabres knotted the contest with a power-play goal. Drew Stafford's shot from the outer portion of the left circle hit traffic in front before Roy eventually pushed the rebound over the goal line from the crease area.

Less than five minutes into the second period, Toronto moved ahead 2-1 on the first goal of the season for Exelby, whose quick shot from the left half-wall squeezed behind a sprawled-out Miller at 4:52.

Only 90 seconds later, though, the Sabres again tied the score when Montador's blast from the top of the right circle -- after a nice drop pass by Jason Pominville -- hit the far post and caromed into the back of the net.
