Final Score: New Jersey 0 - Vancouver 3
Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Henrik Sedin scored his first goal of the season on a penalty shot and Roberto Luongo turned away 30 shots in Vancouver's 3-0 win over New Jersey at Rogers Arena.
Luongo posted the 52nd shutout of his career to move ahead of Dave Kerr, Curtis Joseph and Rogie Vachon into 20th place on the all-time NHL list.
"I think in the first period we didn't really have our legs, we had a few turnovers there, but we settled in nicely after that, especially in the third," Luongo said. "I thought we played some solid hockey protecting that lead."
Raffi Torres and Ryan Kesler scored the other goals for the Canucks, who have won three in a row and four out of their last six.
Martin Brodeur stopped 20 shots in defeat for the Devils, who lost for a fifth time in their last six games during which they have totaled seven goals and no more than two in any of those contests.
New Jersey also received some bad news on Monday when it was announced that forward Zach Parise will undergo exploratory arthroscopic surgery on his knee and will be out for an undetermined period of time. Parise reaggravated an injury Saturday night in Los Angeles that hampered him during the summer.
Brodeur came out of his net on a clearing attempt to play the puck and left it for defenseman Matt Taormina, who circled back behind the right side of the net but lost his edge. Manny Malhotra swooped in from behind, took the puck away and found Torres in the slot from where he wristed the disc past Brodeur to the blocker side with 6:41 to go in the opening period.
"We can't afford to make any mistakes when you don't score any goals," Brodeur said. "We were in control of the game and we just kind of fumble the puck behind our net and here we go again."
Vancouver added to it's lead just 69 seconds into the middle stanza. Mason Raymond emerged from the right corner and threw the puck toward the net. It caromed off Kesler to Brodeur, who sticked it right back to Kesler, who then shrugged off Taormina and backhanded the loose puck home for his fourth goal of the year.
Taormina almost made up for his mistake as he rang a shot off the short side post from the left faceoff dot with two minutes left in the period.
Sedin was pulled down on a breakaway attempt leading to the one-on-one with Brodeur with 6:17 to play in the game.
He moved to the left circle, faked a shot and zipped to his right and tucked a backhander past a sprawling netminder from outside the right crease to finish the scoring in the only meeting of the season between the two teams.
