Harness racing's Bergstein dead

Wed 2nd, November 2011

Tucson, AZ (Sports Network) - Long time harness racing executive Stan Bergstein died early Tuesday morning at his Tucson home. The Hall of Fame member was 87.

Bergstein was the executive vice president of Harness Tracks of America and was voted into Harness Racing's Living Hall of Fame in 1987.

"I worked with Stan in 1959 and 1960, and he was a dear friend of mine," U.S. Trotting Association President Phil Langley said. "His contributions to harness racing are innumerable and will never be duplicated. The industry has lost a great man. My thoughts are with his son, Al, daughter, Lisa, and their families during this difficult time."

The Pennsylvania native attended Northwestern University where he majored in journalism. Following a short stint as a publicist for the legendary Harlem Globetrotters, Bergstein began working in the racing industry.

He became executive vice-president of Harness Tracks of America in 1961 and in the late 1960's joined the U.S. Trotting Association as vice president. He may be best known as a prolific writer on the standardbred industry.

Funeral arrangements have not been finalized.
