Ruler of Ice Lord of the Stakes

Odds & News | MK ( Tue 21st, June 2011 )

This past June 12, Ruler On Ice became the young champion of Belmont Stakes winning the 143rd running of the Grade 1

The horse made a feat of prowess at the hands of the patient Jokey Jose Valdivia Jr; making the owners and the trainer of the horse very proud.

While everybody expected Animal Kingdom to win the $1 million Belmont Stakes, the Kentucky winner fell behind to the last position after the start. The 5-2 favorite clipped with Mucho Macho man, who algo got bumped by Isn´t He Perfect. Animal Kingdom was last by almost 50 feet and suddenly made a run to get him to the sixth position at the best of his effort.

The Race was dominated by Preakness winner Shackleford most of the time, but Ruler On Ice and Valdivia played their cards good. Valdivia pressed over Shackleford during the whole race, while biding his time until the track straightened for the final run. The running of Ruler On Ice took many by surprise; with a sloppy track ahead, they picked up the pace early in the race and got a three-quarter length victory over Stay Thirsty. The match between Derby and Preakness champions never happened; Shackleford finished fifth just little bit ahead of Animal Kingdom.

The Win is the first in stakes race for Ruler On Ice, and this victory made him the second gelding ever to win the Belmont Stakes. The first one was Crème Fraiche in 1985. He debuted and finished second in the optional claimer at Aqueduct Racetrack 2011. On February 22 he won an allowance at Parx Racing, and in March 27 finished third in the Grade 3 Sunland Derby, and became the second favorite in the Federico Tesio at Pimlico on May 7.

At Belmont Stakes; he surprised everyone, even his trainer Kelly Breen; this was the first time he wears blinkers. Ruler On Ice kept the pace of Shackleford until Valdavia rushed his bid to the stretch, passing the eighth pole and digging his way to maintain Stay Thirsty behind. It was one of the best performances in a sloppy and sealed track at 1 ½ miles in 2:30.88.

For Breen, winning was more satisfying because it came for the Halls, George and Lori who hired him as their private trainer in 2007, and because Ruler On Ice overcame his own immaturity and a minor illness after running at Pimlico.

Ruler On Ice earned $600.000 for this victory at Belmont Stakes, returning $51.50 for $2 win while improving his records to 3-2-1 from seven starts and pushing his bankroll to $766,500.
