Elmont, NY (Sports Network) - Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Big Brown had his only official workout Tuesday morning for Saturday's Belmont Stakes. The leading three-year-old worked five furlongs on the Belmont Park track in a flat one-minute.
Regular exercise rider Michelle Nevin was in the saddle for the workout. Big Brown, who has a quarter-crack of his left front hoof, galloped out through six furlongs and was timed in 1:14 2/5.
The colt has a chance at becoming the 12th Triple Crown champion and the first since Affirmed in 1978.
Trained by Rick Dutrow, Jr., Big Brown is being treated for the quarter-crack by hoof specialist Ian McKinlay. McKinlay has sutured the hoof and plans to put a patch on it later this week.
"I'm not going to put a patch on it until Friday," McKinlay said. "And the only reason for that is to let it dry up as much as possible. It is coming along well, and everything is on schedule."
Owned by IEAH Stables and Paul Pompa, Jr., Big Brown is undefeated in five career starts with earnings of more than $2.7 million.
Eight thoroughbreds are now expected to face Big Brown in the 1 1/2 mile "Test of Champion": Anak Nakal, Casino Drive, Denis of Cork, Icabad Crane, Macho Again, Ready's Echo, Tale of Ekati and Da' Tara.
