Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - Super Saver, ridden by Calvin Borel, came from just off the pace to win Saturday's 136th running of the Kentucky Derby. This is the second straight Derby win for Borel and the first for trainer Todd Pletcher.
The $2 million Run for the Roses is the first jewel in racing's Triple Crown and Super Saver is now the only three-year-old who can sweep the three race series, a feat that has not been done since Affirmed in 1978.
The second leg of the Triple Crown is the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, May 15 and the final leg is the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on Saturday, June 5.
The 2010 Kentucky Derby had a full field of 20 three-year-olds, 19 colts or geldings and one filly. Despite the rain and wind there were no scratches from the 1 1/4-mile event. However, shortly before the start the rain stopped and the sun broke through the clouds.
More than 155,000 people were in attendance.
Champion colt Lookin At Lucky was the 6-1 favorite, Super Saver was second at 8-1 and Sidney's Candy was the third pick at 9-1. More than $30 million was in the win pool.
Setting the pace through the sloppy track was Conveyance and jockey Martin Garcia. Prompting the pace was Santa Anita Derby champ Sidney's Candy with rider Joe Talamo.
Also near the lead were Noble's Promise and Arkansas Derby winner Line of David. Borel and Super Saver broke well from the gate and, in typical Borel fashion, the colt stayed on the rail.
Conveyance and Sidney's Candy remained on the lead with Super Saver running in seventh up the backstretch and into the far turn. Around the turn Borel moved his mount off the rail to find running room.
Super Saver went past the leaders coming off the final turn and into the stretch. He had the lead at the top of the stretch and proceeded to extend his advantage down the stretch.
Making a late run was Ice Box and jockey Jose Lezcano. Also making a rally down the stretch was Paddy O'Prado and Make Music for Me.
Super Saver posted a 2 1/2-length win over Ice Box with Paddy O'Prado third and Make Music for Me in fourth and Noble's Promise finishing fifth.
"Obviously Calvin was in a beautiful spot the whole way. We didn't want to handcuff him with too many instructions," Pletcher said. "He's an instinctive rider and he knows this track so well, he knows the horse well, he's ridden him well each time he's been on him and it was as simple as that."
The time for the Run for the Roses over a sloppy track was 2:04.45.
Rounding out the order of finish was Lookin At Lucky, Dublin, Stately Victor, Mission Impazible, Devil May Care, American Lion, Jackson Bend, Discreetly Mine, Dean's Kitten, Conveyance, Homeboykris, Sidney's Candy, Line of David, Awesome Act and Backtalk.
The victory is the third in seven career starts for Super Saver and was worth $1.4 million. Owned by WinStar Farm, the three-year-old has lifetime earnings of more than $1.8 million.
This year Super Saver was third to Odysseus in the Tampa Bay Derby and second in the Arkansas Derby behind Line of David. In 2009 he was fourth to Homeboykris in the Champagne, but came back to win the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes.
Pletcher, who had three other horses in the race, notched his first Kentucky Derby win. Before this year he had tried with 24 total starters. This year he also saddled the filly Devil May Care, Louisiana Derby winner Mission Impazible and Risen Star winner Discreetly Mine.
Borel becomes the first jockey to win three Kentucky Derbies in four years. Last year he won on 50-1 longshot Mine That Bird and in 2007 guided Street Sense to victory. He joins Kent Desormeaux as the only active jockeys with three wins in the Run for the Roses. Last year he won the Preakness on Rachel Alexandra and rode Mine That Bird to third-place in the Belmont Stakes.
"This is what I wanted to do all my life," Borel said. "It's every jockey's dream to win the Derby and I never dreamed I would win three Derbies. But I've worked hard and I'm dedicated to this job and I love the game. It's just what I love to do, and I'm very successful with it. I'm very blessed.
Super Saver returned $18.00, $8.80 and $6.00. Ice Box paid $11.20 and $8.00, and Paddy O'Prado paid $7.40 to show.
