Breeders' Cup winners workout at Twin Spires

Mon 1st, November 2010

Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - Monday morning at Churchill Downs featured some of the biggest names working out for this week's 27th Breeders' Cup World Championships at Churchill Downs.

California Flag, 2009 Turf Sprint winner, had a three-furlong workout over Churchill's turf course. The six-year-old gelding was timed in :36 2/5 over a firm grass surface.

Proviso, who will take on two-time defending winner Goldikova in the Mile, also worked over the turf course. The five-year-old mare, with Kent Desormeaux riding, covered a half-mile in :51 3/5.

"She earned her way in," said trainer Bill Mott about the mare facing two-time defending champion Goldikova. "She was very good. Kent did a great job with her. She warmed up nicely, off a little easy, but she came through the stretch in 23 and change. He never let her off the bridle, and she galloped out very strong. I couldn't be happier."

Four-year-old colt Blame, who will challenge Zenyatta in the Classic, worked four-furlongs in :49 4/5 on Churchill's main track with jockey Garrett Gomez.

"It was just a little maintenance work," Blame's trainer Al Stall Jr. said. "He started out comfortable, did his job, pulled up with a little buck and a squeal, and came on home. That's him. Garrett said he's becoming like a movie star; he loves all the cameras and attention out there. When he cut loose from the pony he tried to take off a little, but he settled down well."

Trainer Jonathan Sheppard sent out his top two horses, Informed Decision and Forever Together, for workouts this morning. Defending Filly and Mare Sprint champ Informed Decision, with Julien Leparoux in the saddle, went a half-mile on the main track in :47 4/5. Forever Together, 2008 Filly and Mare Turf winner, went five-furlongs on the turf course in 1:01.

Santa Anita Derby winner Sidney's Candy also worked five-furlongs on the grass. The three-year-old, prepping for the Mile, was timed in 1:01.

"It was a good move for him," trainer John Sadler said of the colt's work. "He's a fast horse and his speed will be in play here Saturday. Anyone who saw his race at Del Mar this summer (La Jolla Handicap when he established a course record for 1 1/16-miles of 1:39 2/5) knows that he's a special horse capable of special things."

Post positions for the 14 championship races will be drawn on Tuesday, November 2.
