Lausanne, Switzerland (Sports Network) - Justin Gatlin will not be able to defend his 100-meter gold medal at the Summer Olympics in China this year, after the Court of Arbitration for Sport affirmed the four-year ban on the American sprinter on Friday.
The sprinter had appealed to CAS hoping to have it shortened to two years, which would have allowed him time to participate in U.S. team trials, starting on June 27 at the University of Oregon.
But CAS rejected that appeal, as well as one from track and field's governing body, the IAAF, which wanted CAS to extend Gatlin's ban. The only change in Gatlin's case by CAS was in the start date for the ban, which was moved from May 25, 2006 to July 25, when Gatlin voluntarily accepted the ban.
Gatlin's ban for doping violations runs through July 25, 2010.
Gatlin, the gold medalist in the 100 meters at the 2004 Summer Games in Greece, tested positive in April 2006 for excessive testosterone. The positive test negated his 9.77-second run in the event three weeks later which equaled the world record at the time. That record has since been broken.
The three-person CAS panel released a summary of its decision on Friday; a longer report will be issued at a later date.
