Flanagan wins women's US marathon trials

Sat 14th, January 2012

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Shalane Flanagan won the U.S. Olympic trials women's marathon Saturday, while Desiree Davila and Kara Goucher also qualified for this summer's games in London.

Flanagan qualified for her third Olympics, but for the first time in the marathon, by running a time of 2 hours, 25 minutes, 38 seconds. She won the bronze medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2008 Beijing Games.

Saturday's race was just the second marathon of Flanagan's career. The 30- year-old Flanagan made her debut at the 2010 New York City marathon, finishing second.

Davila, 28, will make her Olympic debut after finishing second in Sunday's race, with a time of 2:25:55. She finished second at last year's Boston marathon.

Goucher ran 2:26:06 on Sunday to finish third. The 33-year-old competed in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the 2008 Olympics.
