Nome, AK (Sports Network) - Lance Mackey captured the Iditarod sled dog race for the second consecutive year, finishing the 1,100-mile journey from Anchorage to Nome just under four minutes shy of 9 1/2 days.
Mackey became the first back-to-back winner since Doug Swingley captured three straight from 1999-2001. The Mackey family has now won four Iditarod races, as his father, Dick, won it in 1978 and his older brother, Rick, captured the 1983 race.
Finishing the grueling trek with 11 dogs at 2:46 a.m. (local time), Mackey also accomplished the feat of winning two of the biggest races for the second straight year. As he did in 2007, Mackey captured the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod in the same season.
Jeff King, a four-time Iditarod champ, finished second -- crossing the line 2 hours and 19 minutes after the winner.
