Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Kenya's Robert Cheruiyot captured his third straight Boston Marathon on Monday, while Ethiopia's Dire Tune earned the women's crown for the first time.
Cheruiyot, who also won the race in 2003, crossed the finish line in a time of two hours, seven minutes and 46 seconds to net the top prize.
Last year, Cheruiyot won the race in a time of two hours, 14 minutes and 13 seconds in rainy conditions.
Kenyan men have now claimed 16 out of the last 18 Boston titles.
Morocco's Abderrahime Bouramdane finished second in the men's race with a time of 2:09:04. His countryman Khalid El Boumlili was third, while Ethiopia's Gashaw Asfaw was next.
The first American to cross the finish line was Nicholas Arciniaga. The 24- year-old finished eighth with a time of 2:16:13.
On the women's side, Tune finished with a time of two hours, 25 minutes and 21 seconds, besting Russia's Alevtina Biktimirova, who was just two seconds behind. Kenya's Rita Jeptoo finished in third.
Last year's top female finisher Lidiya Grigoryeva came in ninth place.
Ashley Anklam was the top American woman, finishing 15th.
