Hawaii stuns La., Mexico upends Japan to reach LLWS title game

Sat 23rd, August 2008

South Williamsport, PA (Sports Network) - Waipahu, Hawaii plated six runs in the top of the sixth inning to stun Lake Charles, Louisiana, 7-5, and advance to the championship game of the Little League World Series.

Hawaii will face Mexico on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. (et) for the title, while Louisiana will play Japan in the consolation game at noon (et).

Tanner Tokunaga gave up three runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings on the mound, but also drove in two runs and scored while doubling for Hawaii. Trevor Ling picked up the win for tossing 1 2/3 scoreless frames, giving up only one hit, while Pikai Winchester and Iolana Akau also had two hits, one RBI, and a run scored each for Hawaii.

Kennon Fontenot homered and scored twice for Louisiana, which took a 5-1 lead into the sixth only to see it evaporate. Gunner Leger gave up six runs on five hits in two-third of an inning to take the loss, while Nicholas Abshire had three hits and two RBI for Louisiana.

Sergio Rodriguez belted a two-run homer to key a five-run third inning, as Mexico advanced to the championship game with a 5-4 victory over Japan.

Ruben Molina doubled in a run and Carlos Balboa pitched into the fifth inning to earn the win for Mexico.

Balboa allowed four runs -- two earned -- on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. Jesus Sauceda got the final four outs to notch the save.

Ryosuke Moriuchi started for Japan and yielded all five runs in two-plus innings to absorb the loss.

The Japanese scored twice in the first inning and Moriuchi worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the second before it all fell apart in the third.

Tomas Castillo led off the third with a double and scored on another two- bagger by Molina. Rodriguez then crushed a pitch over the wall in center field for a two-run homer to put Mexico in front.

Hector Dragustinovis and Hector Guevara also drove in runs during the big inning to give Mexico a 5-2 edge.

Japan crawled back into it with a pair of runs in the fifth, as Takumi Ozeki singled home a run and later scored on a wild pitch. Sauceda, though, closed the door in the sixth.
