Minnesota AD Maturi to retire

Thu 2nd, February 2012

Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - University of Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi has decided to retire, effective June 30.

Maturi has spent 10 years as head of the Golden Gophers' athletic department. He led the merger of the men's and women's athletics programs, and helped raise funds for the construction of TCF Bank Stadium.

In addition, Golden Gopher athletes won more than 40 Big Ten or WCHA championships during his tenure and there were no major conference or NCAA infractions under his leadership. The men's and women's hockey teams won national championships, as did the wrestling team.

"It has been a wonderful journey for me here at Minnesota," Maturi said Thursday in a statement. "To cheer for thousands of student athletes, and watch them mature and graduate has made these 10 years fly by. I look forward to my next adventure both at the University of Minnesota and beyond."

Maturi is expected to remain a part of the university, assisting with course development, teaching classes and working on special projects assigned by the school president.

"I am very proud of what we have accomplished during my tenure with the Gophers," Maturi added. "Like all Gophers fans I appreciate all of our victories on the field. But I am equally proud of what we have accomplished off of the field. We have worked hard to develop a culture of compliance, diversity, equity and fiscal responsibility."

In 2011, 255 Gophers athletes were honored as Academic All-Big Ten, and more than 1,200 have received this honor in the past five years.
