Monterrey advances to semis on 'Golden Goal'

Monterrey, Mexico (Sports Network) - Jose Birche scored a 3-pointer in "Golden Goal" overtime Sunday to help La Raza de Monterrey defeat the Chicago Storm to reach the semifinals of the Major Indoor Soccer League playoffs.

Chicago won the first game in the series in overtime but Monterrey rolled to a 17-5 victory Sunday to force the Golden Goal Game 3, which Birche decided with the 3-pointer.

Fourth-seeded Monterrey plays the top-seeded Detroit Ignition in the semifinal round. The first match is Friday at Monterrey and the second game is Sunday at Detroit.

Chicago was eliminated from the playoffs for the second straight season after winning the first game of its series.

The Baltimore Blast, seeded third, defeated the New Jersey Ironmen, 22-10 and 6-4, to sweep their series and advance to the semifinals.

Baltimore hosts the first game of the semifinals against the Milwaukee Wave on Wednesday. Game 2 is Sunday at Milwaukee.

The championship match is April 26 at U.S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee, Wisc.
