Razov helps Chivas down short-handed TFC

Sat 6th, September 2008

Toronto, Ontario (Sports Network) - Ante Razov scored a goal and assisted on two more as Chivas USA recorded a 3-1 win over Toronto FC at BMO Field on Saturday.

Tyler Rosenlund handed Toronto the lead 30 minutes into the match, but Daniel Paladini leveled things for Chivas before halftime. Jonathan Bornstein then gave the visitors the lead in the 58th minute before Razov put the game out of reach in stoppage time.

Saturday's win is the second in one week for Chivas over Toronto, with the Goats earning a 2-1 win over the Reds last Saturday at The Home Depot Center.

Both teams were missing key players for the match, but Toronto was hit especially hard, losing nine players to international duty.

Chivas created the first chance from nothing eight minutes into the game when Francisco Mendoza fired just over the upper right corner from 35 yards, but the home side began to take the game over midway through the opening half.

Chad Barrett got the ball on the left wing and drove it low into the box for Rohan Ricketts at the back post. Ricketts then played it back across the face of goal to a wide open Rosenlund, and he easily finished into the empty net from a few yards.

Barrett then had two good chances to extend the TFC lead but he came up empty. The first opportunity came in the 35th minute when he picked up a loose ball inside the box and fired towards the upper right corner, only to be denied by Zach Thornton.

The striker squandered a great chance two minutes later when he was played into the box on the left but fired wide from six yards.

Those misses proved costly in the 41st minute when Chivas found the equalizer. Razov took possession near the penalty area on the left and slipped the ball to Paladini at the top of the box. He spun away from his defender and fired high past Toronto goalkeeper Brian Edwards, making it a 1-1 match.

Both teams then had a player sent off as Toronto's Marco Velez and Alecko Eskandarian from Chivas were both hit with red cards for elbowing while the two went up for a header in first-half stoppage time.

The second half saw Chivas start better with Paladini blasting a shot over the net from 10 yards before Razov set up his second goal of the game in the 58th minute.

He gained possession 35 yards from goal and sent a perfect pass between two defenders to Bornstein, who got into the box and rolled a shot past Edwards to make it 2-1 to Chivas.

The visitors then lost their keeper in the 75th minute when Danny Dichio collided with Thornton, but Dan Kennedy came off the bench and made a few saves before Razov added an insurance goal deep into stoppage time.
