Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Guillermo Barros Schelotto scored a goal and assisted on two more as the Columbus Crew downed the New England Revolution, 4-0 on Saturday at Crew Stadium in a battle of the top two teams in MLS.
The win is the fourth straight victory for the Crew, and it allows them to open up a five-point lead in the Eastern Conference over the Revs, who saw their four-game unbeaten streak come to an end.
Schelotto opened the scoring in the 40th minute and set up Andy Iro's first goal of the campaign right before halftime. The Argentine then assisted on Jason Garey's goal in the 67th minute before Garey added a second tally in stoppage time to give the Crew a comfortable result.
Columbus had New England back on its heels for the majority of the first half, and they nearly went ahead seven minutes into the game when Steven Lenhart put a scissors kick on goal from six yards that Revs goalkeeper Matt Reis did well to tip over the net.
Schelotto then ripped a free kick from 35 yards that Reis tipped onto the crossbar. Eddie Gaven followed up the play and nodded the ball towards goal but he too was denied by the woodwork.
It was one-way traffic from the Crew, but they didn't find the back of the net until the final five minutes of the half.
Robbie Rogers sent a low cross from the left wing into the middle of the box for Lenhart, but it was knocked away by a New England defender. However, it fell perfectly for Schelotto and he found the lower left corner past the onrushing Reis to make it 1-0.
The home side then added to that lead four minutes later on the final kick of the first half. Schelotto had a free kick on the left wing and he floated the ball towards the front of goal. Iro rose up in a crowd and met the ball with his head six yards from goal, giving Reis no time to react and putting the Crew ahead 2-0 at the break.
The Revs began to get back into the match after the restart, but the hosts struck again in the 67th minute, extending their lead to three goals.
Schelotto again was at the center of the play as he took the ball in midfield and floated a perfect ball over the top of the defense to Garey, who had just come into the game. Garey then took the ball down off his chest and ripped a left-footed shot past Reis.
He then added a late goal on a good pass from former Rev Pat Noonan to complete a dominant Crew effort.
