Conrad goal gives K.C. huge win over N.E.

Kansas City, KA (Sports Network) - The Kansas City Wizards gave themselves a legitimate chance to make the 2008 Major League Soccer Cup playoffs with a 1-0 win over the New England Revolution on Saturday at CommunityAmerica Ballpark.

Wizards' captain Jimmy Conrad scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season to lead the home side to their ninth victory of the season, pushing the club into a tie for fourth in the Eastern Conference table.

The Revs (12-9-7) already clinched a playoff spot, but with the loss, could slip to third in the Eastern Conference table if Chicago gets a result vs. Columbus on Sunday.

New England took a hit just 12 minutes into the game Saturday when team captain Steve Ralston went down with an apparent right ankle injury. While controlling the ball in the midfield, Rapids forward Herculez Gomez challenged for the ball, striking Ralston in the ankle. Ralston left the game and had to be help to the locker room before halftime with a splint on his leg.

Kansas City (9-10-9) almost scored the game's first goal in the 58th minute when Davy Arnaud took on a defender on the right side, drove to the endline and played a low cross across the New England six-yard box. Abe Thompson knocked the ball over the crossbar with a wide-open net in front of him, however, and the game stayed scoreless.

But in the 61st minute Conrad scored the game winner on a corner kick taken by Jack Jewsbury. The Wizards central defender got open in the box and skied to head the chance just under the crossbar.

The Wizards shut the rest of the game down while improving to 36 points with just two regular season games to go.

New England will aim to get back on track on Thursday at D.C. United while Kansas City hosts San Jose two days later in its next MLS fixture.
