Defoe completes Spurs switch

London, England (Sports Network) - England striker Jermain Defoe has completed his transfer from Portsmouth back to former club Tottenham.

The 26-year-old, who spent just 12 months at Fratton Park, has been brought back to White Hart Lane for an undisclosed fee by the man who took him from Spurs to the South Coast club during the last January transfer window.

Pompey paid Spurs $11 million for the former West Ham striker when Harry Redknapp was in charge last season.

But Redknapp made the capture of Defoe his main priority after taking the reins at the north London club at the end of October.

Defoe scored 64 goals in 177 appearances during four years at White Hart Lane and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is delighted to welcome him back.

"We had previously been keen for Jermain to sign a new contract to extend his initial stay, but at that point in time he felt it was in his interests to move on in order to guarantee himself more starts," he told the club's official website.

"I know the club is close to his heart and that he is thrilled to be back and to once again link up with Harry."

Redknapp, who is reported to have paid around $23 million to re-sign the striker, added: "I know what a top-class player he is as well as a proven goalscorer.

"I am pleased to have him here and I am sure the supporters are looking forward to seeing him back in a Spurs shirt."
