Los Angeles (6-6-4) at New York (5-6-5), 6:30 p.m.
East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - When the New York Red Bulls and Los Angeles Galaxy square off at Giants Stadium on Saturday, fans can only hope for a repeat of last year's nine-goal contest that saw the Red Bulls prevail 5-4.
The game was called by many the most exciting regular season contest in Major League Soccer history.
"I'm happy to be back in New York of course, especially after the game we played here last year," Los Angeles Galaxy superstar midfielder David Beckham said. "It was an exciting game, an entertaining game. [There were] lots of goals. But for us, it was the wrong result. Hopefully, we can change that this time around."
Even with the game pitting the league's two biggest markets against each other, the MLS buzz of the week concerned the retirement of Red Bulls and former U.S. national team midfielder Claudio Reyna.
"For the past 14 years, the game of soccer has granted me so many opportunities in life," Reyna said on Wednesday. "I have been fortunate enough to represent my country at the highest level and play the sport I love in stadiums and places I could have only dreamed of when I was growing up. I want to thank the Red Bulls for the opportunity to play in Major League Soccer, as well as my friends, fans, previous clubs and above all else, my family and my wife Danielle, who have been with me every step of the way. While I am sad to be leaving professional soccer, I am also excited about what lies ahead and hope that I can give back to the sport as much as its given to me."
Reyna's retirement freed up space for the team to add Jorge Rojas and Juan Pietravallo to the roster. Both players received visas this week and will be eligible to play on Saturday. Venezuelan international Rojas could start in a central midfield role, while Argentinean midfielder Pietravallo will also be available.
Mexican defender Diego Jimenez, a youth international who last played for Tecos in the Mexican Primera Division, could also be added to the Red Bulls' mix. Because his wife is from the United States, Jimenez does not need to wait on a green card. The team is also in the process of negotiating with Venezuelan club Deportivo Italta on a loan of defender Gabriel Cichero. Cichero has been training with the club but will not be available Saturday.
New York coach Juan Carlos Osorio hopes the influx of new players will help his team fight out of the Eastern basement. The team is winless in it's last three league contests, including back-to-back losses.
The Galaxy, who were at the top of the Western table a couple weeks ago, have fallen to third thanks to their own four-game winless streak and will be aiming to regain their form on Saturday as well.
"I think it's a good opportunity for us to step up," L.A. coach Ruud Gullit said. "We had a setback against D.C. for various reasons especially in the second half with the heat and everything, and of course, in New England. But I think we played much better. I think the team is playing better and we are looking forward to the game [Saturday]."
