San Jose (3-9-4) at Toronto (6-6-3), 6:30 p.m.
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - The San Jose Earthquakes and Toronto FC kick off Major League Soccer's Saturday fixtures in the first match between last year's expansion club and this year's.
TFC (6-6-3) got off to a rocky start in its inaugural campaign, but has come on strong in its sophomore season, contending for a playoff spot halfway through the regular season.
San Jose (3-9-4) is experiencing growing pains, like Toronto did in the first half a year ago, and looks every bit like the expansion club it is.
However, in an effort to get back in the hunt in the mediocre Western table, San Jose overhauled lineup a bit this week, acquiring forward Scott Sealy from Kansas City and English forward Darren Huckerby from Toronto FC while also releasing reserve midfielder Jose Vide and signing Brazilian midfielder Francisco Lima.
"[Sealy] is a proven goal scorer in this league," 'Quakes General Manager of Soccer Operations John Doyle said. "He has a good sense around the net and should immediately bolster our attack. He is an excellent addition to our team."
"[Huckerby] should make an immediate impact on our team with his ability to go forward," Doyle added. "He can score goals and create goals, and he brings with him a wealth of experience in top leagues. We are excited to add a player of his experience and quality to our team."
In exchange for Huckerby and Sealy, the 'Quakes shipped allocations to Toronto and Kansas City, respectively.
San Jose coach Frank Yallop is obviously happy with the added firepower.
"I have been a fan of Darren's play in England for a number of years," he said. "He has had a very impressive career over there and we are looking forward to bringing his exciting style of play here to the Earthquakes."
And with the probable returns of defender Ryan Cochrane and forward Jovan Kirovski from injury, the 'Quakes should have a full complement of players available for Saturday's contest at BMO Field, although Huckerby and Lima will probably only be available in limited roles.
"Like Darren [Huckerby] said, he's only trained once in two months, so it'd be a little tough for him to be thrown out there, but hopefully he can be on the bench," Yallop said. "I don't want to force him into anything he's not quite comfortable with. The same with [Francisco] Lima. We'll see how he feels. Scott Sealy will probably be available, because he's played in MLS and he's fit and raring to go. But they might all get some time."
Toronto, which is still undefeated at home this season, will aim to snap its current two-game losing streak Saturday without the services of Maurice Edu to suspension and Todd Dunivant and Danny Dichio to injury.
