MLS Preview from The Sports Network

D.C. (0-0-0) at Kansas City (0-0-0), 8:30 p.m.

Kansas City, KS (Sports Network) - Curt Onalfo, fired from the Kansas City Wizards mid-way through the 2009 season, returns to the scene of the crime on Saturday night when his new team, D.C. United, squares off against his old team in Major League Soccer action at CommunityAmerica BallPark.

Even though Onalfo coached the Wizards last season, he may struggle to recognize a large number of players as his former colleague, Peter Vermes, has completely retooled the Wizards' roster.

Goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen, defenders Korede Aiyegbusi and Pablo Escobar, midfielders Stephane Auvray, Craig Rocastle, Ryan Smith, Igor Kostrov and Birahim Diop, and forward Teal Bunbury are new to the team this offseason.

On top of those new payers, Kansas City just announced on Thursday night the signing of Indian forward Sunil Chhetri. While Chhetri will be unavailable to play on Saturday, he will be counted on to add a lot to the team's attack in coming fixtures.

"One thing we really like about Sunil is that he's a crafty player," Vermes said. "Technically he's very sharp, and he's a guy that has good attacking tendencies."

That is something the club lack in recent years, when it underachieved while missing the playoffs in 2009.

"I think we are going to be good," Kansas City captain Davy Arnaud told The Sports Network. "We have underachieved the past couple years. It wasn't good enough and we know that."

United has also underachieved, and the result is an infusion of a number of younger players to this season's roster.

We feel like we have some good veteran players in Troy Perkins, Jaime Moreno to name a few that can really provide a leadership role," Onalfo said. "We have a guy in Santino Quaranta that has dealt with adversity off the field and now is really matured off the field and is also a really talented player on the field. He has played almost 10 years in the league, so guys like him and Clyde Simms, who is entering his prime, can really add leadership to the team. "You sprinkle in all these young players and it's a nice mix."

Defensive midfielder Simms is probable after knee surgery this offseason, but he probably won't play 90 minutes. Fullback Devon McTavish could also be limited because of a hamstring strain, leaving United shorthanded in the back, although the signing of former Chivas USA defender Carey Talley should help alleviate the crunch this weekend.

The Wizards could be without their defensive midfielder Birahim Diop as well because of a knee injury, while Arnaud and midfielder Roger Espinoza are listed as probable with knocks.
