MLS Preview from The Sports Network

New England (0-0-0) at Los Angeles (0-0-0), 11 p.m.

Carson, CA (Sports Network) - The New England Revolution will travel to take on the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday night as the two Major League Soccer clubs open their respective seasons at The Home Depot Center.

The Galaxy are coming off a disappointing end to their highly successful 2009 campaign, losing in penalty kicks to Real Salt Lake in the MLS Cup championship game.

Adding to the tough road fixture for the Revs, Donovan has been playing with Everton of the English Premier League all winter on loan, meaning he is likely the most fit and in-form player heading into the first weekend of action in MLS.

"It's their home opener and, obviously, Landon's back again," New England coach Steve Nicol told MLSsoccer.com this week. "Whether he'd have been away or whether he'd stayed, it wouldn't have made any difference. He was always going to be a threat."

Containing Donovan will be the task of the revs re-tooled backline.

"We brought Corey [Gibbs] in and Seth [Sinovic] in from the draft," Revs right back Alston said. "I like where it's going right now. It looks like we are starting to put things together. It looks like we should have a pretty solid backline."

Gibbs and second-year pro Darrius Barnes will be the team's center backs and Sinovic will get an extended look on the left, with Chris Tierney likely taking over on the right side.

"Sinovic has done a great job at left back," Nicol told The Sports Network. "Corey Gibbs has come in, he's got experience, which is huge. When you lose guys that have the experience of some of the guys we lost, it makes a difference, not just on the field but in the dressing room."

"Corey has seen it all and done it all," Alston said. "You can tell he really knows the game. He seems like a natural leader. It's good to have him, especially in the back where we're very young."

Unlike the Revs with Donovan, the Galaxy won't have to deal with New England's best player as midfielder Shalrie Joseph is not expected to play with a hip injury. Also out are forwards Edgaras Jankauskas and Taylor Twellman, while midfielder Mauricio Castro is doubtful.

The Galaxy are relatively healthy, with forwards Alan Gordan and Jovan Kirovski and midfielder Clint Mathis the only names on the injury report. All three are expected to be available on Saturday, however.
