Final Score: Colorado 1 - San Jose 1
Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - San Jose coach Frank Yallop angrily tossed a few water bottles, then was tossed himself after the Colorado Rapids scored the tying goal in the second half of 1-1 draw on Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium that extended the Earthquakes' winless skid to six matches.
Ryan Johnson gave the Earthquakes the lead earlier in the second half, but the Rapids responded eight minutes later when Casey got free in the area to tie the match on a header in the 70th minute.
Yallop thought Casey fouled Jason Hernandez to get free on the goal but no call was made. Yallop argued on the sideline and was ejected. As he started walking off the field, Yallop took off his suit coat and threw it to the ground.
San Jose (3-9-4) still picked up one point to remain with striking distance of the top spot in the congested Western Conference of Major League Soccer, even though it has the worst record and hasn't won since June 7.
Colorado (6-8-2) had a chance to move into a first-place tie with Chivas USA and Los Angeles - at least temporarily - but still closed in on the co-leaders. Real Salt Lake has a chance take over sole possession of first later Saturday.
The Earthquakes, who were playing at Buck Shaw Stadium for the first time since May 22, had more good scoring chances in the opening half but couldn't convert.
Kei Kamara had a chance in the 10th minute when he nearly poked the ball past Rapids goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul, who made a quick reaction save. Johnson shot just wide of the right post in the 36th and bad hop cost Ivan Guerrero a chance for a one-on-one chance with Coundoul in the 45th.
Casey had the Rapids' only good chance in the first 45 minutes, but he slotted the ball just wide of the left post in the 12th minute.
Johnson finally broke the scoreless match in the 62nd minute when he ran under a free kick from Ramiro Corrales to beat Coundoul with a header.
Corrales drove the ball toward the left side of the area and Johnson got behind his defender and Coundoul didn't react to his shot until it was behind him. It was the third goal of the season for Johnson and the first assist for Corrales.
After Coundoul made a great diving save to deny San Jose's Ronnie O'Brien on a free kick in the 67th minute, his teammates rewarded him with the tying goal in the 70th.
Terry Cooke, who picked up his team-high fifth assist, swung the ball into the area off a free kick to Casey, and he headed perfectly into the right side past a helpless San Jose goalie Joe Cannon.
Casey did make contact with Hernandez to open some space, and the contact and no foul was enough to set off Yallop. His ejection didn't provide a spark for San Jose, though. The Earthquakes defeated Colorado 2-0 earlier this season.
San Jose, which reportedly has reached a deal to sign English striker Darren Huckerby, will try to snap its skid on July 19 when it visits Toronto FC.
Colorado, which beat Red Bull New York 4-0 last weekend, will try to extend its unbeaten streak to three games when it visits FC Dallas on July 19.
