MLS Game Summary - Columbus at Colorado

Final Score: Columbus 2 - Colorado 0

Commerce City, CO (Sports Network) - The Columbus Crew earned three valuable road points by topping the Colorado Rapids, 2-0, at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Sunday night.

Goals on each side of the half by Steven Lenhart and Jason Garey were enough offense for the visitors as Crew goalkeeper Will Hesmer made seven saves - many of them of the incredible variety - to earn his fifth clean sheet of the season.

Conversely, Rapids goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul made just one save while letting in both goals.

Lenhart was the first to victimize the Colorado 'keeper when he took a pass from Stefani Miglioranzi in stride heading into the Rapids' penalty area and chipped over Coundoul, who hesitated before coming out to challenge the striker. It was Lenhart's third goal of the season in his first start of the season.

Lenhart put his team at an extreme disadvantage at the end of the first half, however, when he elbowed Colorado defender Facundo Erpen in the head in front of the Rapids' goal. Referee Shane Moody handed Lenhart of red card for the foul, forcing the Crew to play the entire second half down a man.

That didn't seem to matter as the Crew slowed the game down in the second half before putting it out of reach with the insurance goal by Garey in the 75th minute.

Hesmer punted the ball out of his end into the offensive third, where Eddie Gaven flicked a header to Garey, who was breaking into the Rapids' area. Garey made no mistake, chipping a shot over Coundoul for his first goal since September of 2007.

The Crew (9-5-4) moved to within two points of the Eastern Conference leading New England Revolution with the win and will look to take the lead when they play at Houston on Saturday. The Rapids (6-9-3) dropped to second-to-last in the Western table and will look to move up when they host Toronto in their next league fixture on Aug. 9.
