Final Score: Los Angeles 0 - FC Dallas 4
Frisco, TX (Sports Network) - Kenny Cooper had two goals and an assist, Dominic Oduro had a goal and an assist and Schellas Hyndman won his first game as coach of FC Dallas in a 4-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday.
Cooper scored the first two goals at Pizza Hut Park to up his season total to 11 in what could be his last Major League Soccer match. He assisted on Oduro's goal before halftime as Dallas avenged its 5-1 loss to Los Angeles in May.
That loss resulted in a coaching change for FC Dallas, which fired Steve Morrow and eventually hired Hyndman as his replacement in June. Dallas was winless in its first four games under Hyndman, although the last three were draws.
Despite a losing record, Dallas (5-6-7) moved within two points of first-place Real Salt Lake in Major League Soccer's Western Conference. Real hosts Toronto FC on Monday.
The Galaxy, the highest-scoring team in the league, were shutout for the third time this year and are winless in their last six. Los Angeles (6-7-5) remained one point behind Real despite slipping below .500.
Cooper scored his first goal - also his 10th of the season - in the 15th minute on a deflected shot from outside the penalty area. Cooper's left-footed blast deflected off L.A. defender Eduardo Dominguez and rolled inside the right post.
Cooper and Oduro combined to double the lead two minutes later. Cooper started the play when he stole the ball in midfield from Dominguez. Oduro took control of the ball dribbled toward the area before dropping a pass off to Cooper, who scored inside the left post for his 11th goal.
Cooper also played a part in the third goal, making the initial pass on Oduro's goal. Cooper passed to Arturo Alvarez, who found Oduro streaking down the field with a long pass. Oduro got L.A. goalie Steve Cronin to leave his feet and then dribbled around him to score into an empty net in the 36th minute.
Oduro nearly joined Cooper with two goals minutes into the second half when he hit the right post. Cooper almost took advantage of the near-miss by Oduro when he directed the deflection on goal, but Cronin stopped his diving header.
Oduro had another great chance to score his second goal in the 67th minute when he made a nice turn in the box to test Cronin, but the L.A. goalkeeper made one of his six saves.
Eric Avila nearly scored Dallas' fourth goal in the 84th minute when his blast from outside the penalty area beat Cronin but slammed off the crossbar. Cooper continued to punish the woodwork a minute later when he hammered a shot off the crossbar to miss a hat trick by inches.
Cooper's 11 goals is second in the league behind L.A.'s Landon Donovan. Cooper is coveted by a few European teams, and it's possible he could transfer in the next few days.
Abe Thompson completed the big win with a beautiful goal in the 89th minute. He swerved a shot from just outside the left edge of the area into the upper right corner.
FC Dallas goalie Dario Sala had a night off against the normally high-powered L.A. offense, making just two saves for his fifth shutout of the season.
Dallas will try to build on its win Aug. 3 at Toronto FC, which is unbeaten at home. L.A. will try to snap its skid on Aug. 3 at the San Jose Earthquakes.
