MLS Game Summary - New York at San Jose

Final Score: Red Bull New York 1 - San Jose 1

Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - Newly-signed English striker Darren Huckerby scored his first goal for the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday, helping the club overcame an early own goal to tie Red Bull New York, 1-1, at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Huckerby, who made his debut in Major League Soccer last weekend, scored in the 13th minute. San Jose (3-9-5) avoided its 10th loss of the season but still saw its winless skid reach eight games.

New York (5-6-7) struggled on the road again, even with new midfielders Jorge Rojas and Juan Pietravallo starting for the first time together. Eric Denton's own goal saved the Red Bulls another away loss, but they still fell to 1-5-4 on the road.

"The first half was probably the best that we've played this year. We obviously gave them an early goal, but throughout the game, I never felt threatened," San Jose coach Frank Yallop said.

San Jose dug a huge hole just four minutes into the match when Denton's pass to goalie Joe Cannon sailed into the upper right corner of the net. The goal came off a harmless cross but Denton decided to head the ball back to his goalie and Cannon was just off the line.

The Earthquakes are the lowest-scoring team in the league with just 12 goals in 18 games, but managed to erase the mistake within 10 minutes.

Huckerby, who played with Manchester City and Norwich City in England's Premier League, tied the match in the 13th minute.

Scott Sealy, another recent addition by San Jose, set up the goal with a shot that forced New York goalie Jon Conway to make a diving save. Conway barely got his hands on the ball, though, and it bounced to Huckerby.

The 32-year-old Huckerby easily slotted the rebound inside the left post to tie the score at 1. It was a big goal for the 'Quakes, who have tied four of their last five during the winless skid.

"I have been watching Scott, he tends to turn and shoot pretty early so I knew he was going to shoot, but I didn't know if the goalkeeper was going to drop it or not," Huckerby said. "He dropped it and I don't tend to score many tap-in, but it counts the same as a long shot, so I'm pretty pleased with it."

San Jose's Francisco Lima, a Brazilian midfielder also playing his second match for the club, also played well. Lima helped control the midfield and San Jose created a decent amount of pressure without finding the net again.

"With the new signings, I think they are becoming a good team," New York coach Juan Carlos Osorio said.

New York didn't get as much production from its new players. Rojas, who had two assists in his debut last week, struggled to create any chances for himself or his teammates.

Pietravallo, who came off the bench in the 2-2 draw with Los Angeles last week, started in midfield.

"It was ugly," Conway said. "All in all though, a point on the road its not a bad one."

San Jose will try to snap its losing streak on Aug. 3 when it hosts Los Angeles at Mcafee Coliseum in Oakland.

New York, which is winless in five straight, returns to MLS action on Aug. 10 when it hosts D.C. United.
