Final Score: Real Salt Lake 1 - Houston 2
Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Brad Davis scored two goals in a three minute span in the second half to lead the Houston Dynamo past Real Salt Lake, 2-1, in their home opener at Robertson Stadium on Thursday night.
RSL, which was coming off a dominating win in it's opener last weekend, looked like it had the game under control with a 1-0 advantage until a pair of penalty calls against Jamison Olave just after the break allowed Davis to give the home side the lead.
RSL midfielder Javier Morales, who scored two goals and an assist last week to earn MLS player of the Week, started where he left off by giving the away side a 1-0 advantage inside 20 minutes.
Alvaro Saborio started the chance by hanging onto the ball in the midfield before touching a pass to Kyle Beckerman. Beckerman then one-timed a through- ball into the Dynamo penalty area to Morales, who drove around a flat-footed Bobby Boswell and fired past Pat Onstad for his third goal of the season.
The Dynamo took another hit just before the half-hour mark when veteran striker Brian Ching came up lame, grabbing his hamstring, after sprinting into the RSL penalty area after a loose ball. Luis Landin was brought on as his replacement as the Houston offense struggled to create scoring opportunities the rest of the half.
But things turned around quickly in the second half.
The Dynamo earned their first penalty when Olave pulled down Houston midfielder Geoff Cameron, who was making a diagonal run through the penalty area.
Davis buried the chance for his first goal of the year in the 53rd minute.
Less than three minutes later the Dynamo earned another penalty after Olave was ruled to have fouled Landin in the area.
Houston striker Dominic Oduro streaked up the right side before crossing to Landin in the area. As Landin tried to cut the ball back across the grain, Olave swept in and made slight contact. Landin went down and Davis converted his second PK of the game to make it 2-1, which is how the game ended.
Houston (1-0-1) will try to build on the effort when it hosts the Los Angeles Galaxy on April 10 in its next MLS fixture, while RSL (1-1-0) hosts the Seattle Sounders FC later the same night in its home opener.
