Boca Juniors inches closer to Apertura title

Buenos Aires, Argentina (Sports Network) - Dario Cvitanich and Rolando Schiavi scored in the first half as Boca Juniors downed Godoy Cruz, 2-1, on Sunday to inch closer to clinching Argentina's Apertura title.

Boca Juniors can clinch its first Argentina league title since 2008 with a tie in its next game against Banfield on Sunday. Boca holds a nine-point lead over second-place Tigre with just three matches remaining in the season.

Boca would have to lose all three matches and Tigre would have to win its last three for the leaders to surrender the top spot. Boca last won the Apertura in 2008.

Carlos Luna, Diego Castano and Diego Morales scored to lead Tigre to a 3-0 win over Atletico Rafaela on Friday to kick off the weekend's action.

On Saturday, Cesar Pereyra scored twice as nine-man Belgrano downed Racing 3-2 on the road, Gaston Caprari had a pair of goals as San Martin beat Olimpo 3-0 on the road, Newell's tied San Lorenzo 0-0, and All Boys tied Lanus 0-0.

Also Sunday, Juan Veron scored in the 80th as Estudiantes won 2-1 at Arsenal, Santiago Salcedo scored in stoppage time as Argentinos Juniors tied Banfield 2-2, and Velez Sarsfield tied Colon 1-1.

On Monday, Union extended its unbeaten streak to six with a 0-0 draw against Independiente, which is unbeaten in four straight.
