Buenos Aires, Argentina (Sports Network) - Former Argentina coach Alfio Basile has been named new coach of Racing as the Argentine club moved quickly to find a replacement for departed Diego Simeone.
Simeone recently left and accepted the head coaching job at Atletico Madrid in Spain and Basile was tabbed for his fourth spell in charge of the club. Racing finished second in the recently completed Argentina Apertura season.
"I want to be a champion," Basile said, according to FIFA's website.
The 68-year-old Basile played for Racing from 1964-70 and started his coaching career in 1975 that led him to two stints in charge of Argentina, from 1991-94 and 2006-08.
Basile has also coached Boca Juniors and Velez Sarsfield in Argentina, as well as Atletico Madrid, among many others. He previously coached Racing in 1978, and from 1986-89 and 1996-97.
