Flamengo signs Chilean defender Gonzalez

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Sports Network) - Flamengo inked Chile defender Marcos Gonzalez on a three-year contract Tuesday from Universidad de Chile.

The Brazilian-born Gonzalez started his club career with Universidad de Chile, and later played with Rangers, Palestino and Universidad Catolica in Chile, Colon in Argentina and the Columbus Crew in the United States before returning to Universidad last season.

The 31-year-old, who was born in Rio de Janeiro, has played nine international matches for Chile. He was voted the best defender in the Americas by Uruguayan newspaper El Pais last season.
