Title contenders set to break in new coaches

Fri 29th, August 2008

Amsterdam, Netherlands (Sports Network) - The three biggest clubs in the Eredivisie, PSV Eindhoven, Ajax, and Feyenoord will each be starting the new Dutch season with fresh faces in charge.

The four-time defending league champions, PSV, will be led by Huub Stevens, who has been plying his trade in the Bundesliga for most of the last 10 years, while Dutch soccer legend and former national team boss Marco van Basten returns to the club where he started his professional career.

Van Basten will be charged with ending PSV's run of dominance in recent years, and his biggest summer signing was Barcelona defender Oleguer, who will replace the departed Johnny Heitinga.

Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes and striker Jefferson Farfan both left PSV over the summer, but Stevens was able to recruit netminder Andreas Isaksson and striker Nordin Amrabat to Eindhoven to take their spots.

The two Dutch giants once again figure to battle for the title, and both teams will open their season away from home on Saturday, with the defending champs traveling to Utrecht, while Ajax makes the trip to Willem II.

Saturday's other two matches include NEC hosting Graafschap and Roda entertaining Twente, which was bounced from the Champions League by Arsenal this past week.

Feyenoord will be hoping to rebound from a few disappointing campaigns under new manager Gert Jan Verbeek, who joined the club from Heerenveen. Verbeek did not receive a lot of help over the summer in terms of new signings, but he will still be expected to get Feyenoord back into the top three, and that task begins on Sunday at Heracles.

Heerenveen was a very entertaining team last season, and they figure to once again challenge for a spot in Europe this year. The team opens on the road at newly-promoted Volendam, while Den Haag returns to top-flight soccer after a one-year absence and travels to Sparta. Sunday's other match features AZ Alkmaar hosting NAC.
