Ajax closes gap to one point

Tilburg, Netherlands (Sports Network) - Ajax moved to within one point of Eredivisie leaders Twente on Wednesday as they recorded a 2-0 win at Willem II.

Luis Suarez scored his league-leading 33rd goal of the campaign inside of four minutes, while Marko Pantelic added another shortly before the hour mark to seal the win.

Ajax has now earned 79 points from 32 games, while Twente has 80 points with two matches left in the season.

Willem II has lost five straight games, and they are four points from safety.

Ajax took control of the game inside of four minutes as Willem II's Danny Schenkel tripped Suarez inside the penalty area.

The striker picked himself up and proceeded to fire the spot kick into the upper corner of the net, giving his side an early 1-0 lead.

Suarez almost added to his tally shortly before halftime but his curling effort was kept out by a good diving save from goalkeeper Maikel Aerts.

However, Aerts could not keep the ball out in the 59th minute when Dennis Rommedahl drew two defenders and slid a pass to the front of the net for Pantelic to fire home.

Feyenoord moved into fourth place with a 3-0 win over Sparta, PSV Eindhoven was held to a 2-2 draw by Heerenveen, Roda downed Venlo, 4-2, NEC scored three times in the final 12 minutes to beat Den Haag, 3-2, while Groningen and Utrecht finished 1-1.
