Rooney saves a point for United

Sun 6th, April 2008

Middlesbrough, England (Sports Network) - Wayne Rooney scored in the 74th minute to salvage a 2-2 draw for Manchester United in its match with Middlesbrough at The Riverside Stadium on Sunday.

Boro's Afonso Alves scored both goals for his side after United's Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring 10 minutes into the contest.

The draw opens up the title race considerably for Chelsea, which is now only three points back of the defending champions. United will meet Arsenal next weekend before traveling to Stamford Bridge in three weeks, so there is still plenty left to do.

Boro's one point pushes them nine points clear of the drop zone as they look to be safe for another year.

United started well by taking the lead inside of 10 minutes when Michael Carrick's cross found an open Ronaldo near the six-yard box and the Portuguese winger fired home his 37th goal in all competitions.

The goal took some of the life out of the home crowd, but they were back in the match 10 minutes before halftime when Alves tallied his goal for the club.

Gary O'Neil's long ball from the back was flicked on by Jeremie Aliadiere into the path of Alves. This put the Brazilian in on goal and he floated a shot over United goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar and into the back of the net.

Alves was dangerous throughout the match, and he put Boro up in the 56th minute, again teaming up with Aliadiere. The former Arsenal man once again put Alves into the box with a header, and he once again beat Van der Sar with a right-footed shot to the delight of the home supporters.

It was quite a day for Alves, who had come close to scoring his first goal for Boro on a number of occasions prior to Sunday.

However, Rooney quieted the celebrations with 15 minutes to play when Park Ji- Sung beat a Boro defender and found the England striker with a cross that Rooney smacked home off the leg of Boro's Emanuel Pogatetz.

The home side was more dangerous in the final 10 minutes, but they had to settle for a well-earned point instead.

Everton closed to within three points of fourth-place Liverpool on Sunday as the Toffees got a goal from Leon Osman in the 56th minute to down Derby 1-0.
