London, England (Sports Network) - Fabio Capello has reappointed John Terry as his England captain ahead of defensive colleague Rio Ferdinand.
Terry, 27, was one of three candidates under consideration for the role on a full-time basis and will once again wear the armband in Wednesday's friendly against Czech Republic.
The Chelsea skipper was first made international captain by former manager Steve McClaren in August 2006 before England failed to qualify for Euro 2008.
Coach Capello opted to take his time in appointing a permanent captain after rotating the armband between Terry, Ferdinand, Steven Gerrard and former skipper David Beckham during his first four games at the helm.
The Italian coach was keen to make his permanent appointment before England kicked off its qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup on Sept. 6 against Andorra.
Ferdinand was believed to be favorite to be handed the armband, but the Manchester United defender has been named Terry's vice captain.
Terry, who has won 44 international caps, was delighted to be asked to carry on as captain after leading England on 14 previous occasions.
"I think everybody realizes it means the world to me, to retain the armband," he said. "To get the armband back is a huge achievement for me.
"For me to get it above the likes of him (Ferdinand) and the other players in the squad is a great honor."
