Sunderland, England (Sports Network) - Sunderland have reached agreement with Olympique Marseille to sign striker Djibril Cisse on a season-long loan.
The 27-year-old France international has been linked with a return to the Premier League throughout the summer after struggling to settle back into Ligue 1.
Cisse spent two seasons at Liverpool before joining Marseille initially on a season-long loan for the 2006-07 campaign and then signing on a permanent basis 12 months ago.
The former Auxerre striker's career has been blighted by serious injury after suffering a double leg break while with the Reds in October 2004.
He also suffered a second similar injury on the eve of the 2006 World Cup which ended his chances of featuring in the tournament.
Cisse scored 22 times in 50 appearances in all competitions for Marseille last season.
"An agreement in principle has been reached between OM and Sunderland for the loan of Djibril Cisse to the English club until the end of the season," Marseille president Pape Diouf said in a club statement.
"Some details still need to be sorted out ahead of the confirmation of the loan."
Earlier on Wednesday, Black Cats boss Roy Keane revealed he was hopeful of completing several signings within 48 hours.
