Wigan, England (Sports Network) - James Milner scored the game-winner in the 63rd minute and Aston Villa edged Wigan 2-1 on Tuesday at DW Stadium to move within three points of fourth-place Tottenham in England's Premier League.
Wigan handed Villa the early lead through an own goal from James McCarthy, and Milner added his fifth goal of the season in the second half.
Milner, who also has 11 assists, could earn a role on England's World Cup side following an injury to David Beckham, and Villa coach Martin O'Neill believes he can handle any role in midfield for the Three Lions.
"James can play out there and probably that has been lost a bit since he moved into the middle," O'Neill said. "But he is an all-purpose player and, at this stage, James would have as good a chance as anyone of being on the plane outside of those absolutely nailed on to go to the World Cup.
"If he had to start on the right, he wouldn't let England down. Not at all, no problem."
Villa won its 13th match, and is tied for the second fewest losses in the EPL this season with Chelsea. Tottenham holds the final Champions League spot, but Villa, Manchester City and Liverpool are all within three points or less.
Wigan, which got its lone goal from Gary Caldwell two minutes after the own goal, is four points above the drop zone in 15th.
