Manchester, England (Sports Network) - Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has blasted the Football Association's disciplinary system after Steven Gerrard escaped punishment for the second time in a week.
The Liverpool captain was not suspended despite making what appeared to be a V-sign towards referee Andre Marriner in the 1-0 defeat at Wigan Athletic earlier this month before also escaping censure for a nasty challenge on Portsmouth's Michael Brown.
Ferguson cannot understand the discrepancies in the FA's system after Rio Ferdinand was eventually handed a four-game ban following a clash with Hull City striker Craig Fagan earlier in the season.
The England international had initially been suspended for three matches but was handed an extra one-match ban for what was deemed to be a frivolous appeal.
Ferguson said: "I didn't expect anything to happen to Steven Gerrard. It (the disciplinary panel) is a dysfunctional unit. I don't know what they're doing.
"There's no consistency for a start and I didn't expect to get any. I'm not too bothered about it. They can do what they want down there. It's crazy at times."
