Montpellier closes gap on Bordeaux

Montpellier, France (Sports Network) - Montpellier moved to within six points of Ligue 1 leaders Bordeaux on Saturday as they recorded a 2-0 win over Marseille at Stade de la Mosson.

Karim Ait-Fana tallied the opener in the 49th minute and Benoit Cheyrou's own goal 15 minutes from time was enough to secure the three points that Montpellier a bit closer to the defending champions.

Montpellier remains two points clear of third-placed Lille, while Marseille slips to sixth with the defeat.

Marseille created a good chance in the opening minutes with Hatem Ben Arfa setting up Mamadou Niang for a good shot that was just kept out by Montpellier goalkeeper Geoffrey Jourdren.

However, the rest of the match belonged to the hosts, who were inches from taking the lead when Victor Montano's 20-yard free kick came back off the crossbar.

Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda then produced a good stop on Montpellier's Steve Marveaux and he was fortunate to watch Montano miss the target from close range in the final minute of the first half.

The hosts finally went in front four minutes after the break when Romain Pitau's pass found Ait-Fana at the edge of the area and he beat defender Charles Kabore before firing past Mandanda.

Marseille was still within a goal 15 minutes from time, but they fell two behind when Alberto Costa's corner kick was redirected into his own net by Cheyrou, leaving the visitors with no way back into the match.

Leaders Bordeaux were held to a 0-0 draw by second-from-the-bottom Boulogne, while third-placed Lille beat Lens, 1-0, with a goal from Eden Hazard.

Park Chu-Young scored two goals in Monaco's 3-2 victory over Nice, Lorient fell 1-0 at Nancy with a first-half goal coming from Youssouf Hadji, Toulouse scored a 3-1 win at Le Mans and Sylvain Marveaux tallied two goals as Rennes pounded Grenoble, 4-0.
