Lyon takes over third place

Lyon, France (Sports Network) - Lyon moved into the third and final Champions League spot in Ligue 1 on Wednesday as they took care of Monaco, 3-0, at the Stade de Gerland.

The win lifts the team one point ahead of fourth-placed Auxerre with just a single game to play, meaning that Lyon needs a win at home against relegated Le Mans to secure a top-three spot on the final day of the season.

Miralem Pjanic put Lyon ahead midway through the first half and Bafetimbi Gomis doubled the advantage shortly after halftime. Lisandro Lopez then capped the scoring three minutes from time with his 15th goal of the season.

A slow first 20 minutes was followed by a good spell of pressure from the home side and they took the lead in the 28th minute through a corner kick.

Michel Bastos played the ball into the box and it was flicked on to the back post by Cris, allowing Pjanic to volley past goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier.

Shortly after the break, the lead was doubled as Bastos and Pjanic again had a hand in the goal.

Bastos worked his way down the right wing and played the ball into the area for Pjanic, who slipped it to Gomis for an easy finish from close range.

Lopez secured the points three minutes from time when he was released by an Ederson pass and rounded the goalkeeper before rolling the balll into an empty net.
