Schalke's Muller backs Kuranyi

Gelsenkirchen, Germany (Sports Network) - Schalke general manager Andreas Muller has defended striker Kevin Kuranyi over his walkout from the Germany camp during the 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over Russia.

Kuranyi was upset at being overlooked for the game, with his frustration compounded by having been overlooked for the 2006 World Cup finals and having barely featured at Euro 2008.

Muller told the club's official website: "Joachim Low should not act surprised. Kevin had told him before the game he was going home, he simply felt there was a campaign against him.

"He has called Joachim Low to apologize for his behavior, but that does not change his decision to retire from the national team."
