Bremen, Germany (Sports Network) - Goals from Hugo Almeida and Torsten Frings in the final 15 minutes allowed Werder Bremen to claim a 2-2 draw against Stuttgart at the Weserstadion on Saturday.
Pavel Pogrebnyak and Sami Khedira provided the visitors with a two-goal lead at halftime, but after Almeida snuck a shot underneath Stuttgart goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, Frings converted from the penalty spot six minutes later after a questionable penalty decision.
The result leaves Bremen four points clear of Stuttgart as both teams continue to push for places in Europe.
Stuttgart went ahead after 15 minutes as Alexander Hleb played a ball into the path of Pogrebnyak and he swept it home from in front of goal, while Bremen's Claudio Pizarro squandered a chance to level the match on the half-hour mark when he failed to beat Lehmann from close range.
Cacau should have doubled Stuttgart's advantage in the 38th minute when he was left alone in front of goal but shot over the crossbar from eight yards. However, the lead would be extended before the break as Khedira headed home Timo Gebhart's right-wing cross in the 43rd minute.
Bremen began to create some chances in the second half and they were rewarded with 15 minutes to play as Per Mertesacker played Almeida into the box and he rolled a shot underneath Lehmann and inside the far post.
It took only six minutes for Bremen to add another goal as Marko Marin got into the box on the left and appeared to go down quite easily with Stefano Celozzi nearby. However, the referee pointed to the penalty spot and Frings made no mistake with his effort, sending the shot into the upper corner of the net to snatch a point.
Bayern Munich could only manage a 1-1 draw with Koln, which leaves them three points clear of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen, which faces Nurnberg on Sunday, while Schalke closed to within two points of Bayern as they handled Eintracht, 4-1.
Hamburg remained in fourth place with a 1-0 win over Hertha Berlin, Edin Dzeko scored twice in Wolfsburg's 4-1 victory against Bochum, Hannover got past Freiburg, 2-1, and Borussia Dortmund cruised by Monchengladbach, 3-0, with two goals from Mohamed Zidan.
