Liverpool edges Unirea in Europa League

Liverpool, England (Sports Network) - David N'Gog scored in the 81st minute as Liverpool started the knockout stage of the Europa League with a 1-0 win over Unirea at Anfield on Thursday.

Liverpool dominated the defensive Romanian side but, after Steven Gerrard just missed handing the Reds the lead 25 seconds into the match, it took another 80 minutes to finally solve the visitors.

Substitute Ryan Babel set up the game-winner with a cross from the left, which substitute Dani Pacheco met at the far post and sent back to the near side to N'Gog for an easy header from five yards.

Liverpool will try to secure its advance from the Round of 32 when it visits Unirea on Feb. 25.

English side Fulham started its series with 2-1 win over defending UEFA Cup champion Shakhtar Donetsk. Zoltan Gera scored in the third minute, and Bobby Zamora had the winner in the 63rd at Craven Cottage.

German champion Wolfsburg, which has struggled in the Bundesliga this season, opened with a 2-2 draw at Villarreal thanks to a pair of goals from Grafite, and Hamburg used a 27th-minute penalty from Marcell Jansen to edge PSV 1-0.

Juventus got two goals from Amauri as it opened with a 2-1 win at Ajax, Axel Witsel scored twice as Belgian side Standard Liege rallied from two goals down in the final 23 minutes for a 3-2 win over Salzburg, and Djibril Cisse scored the last of three second-half goals as Panathinaikos edged Roma 3-2.

Also Thursday, Club Brugge beat Valencia 1-0, Lille beat Fenerbahce 2-1, Rubin beat Hapoel Tel-Aviv 3-0, Twente beat Werder Bremen 1-0, Marseille beat FC Copenhagen 3-1, Anderlecht tied Bilbao 1-1, Benfica tied Hertha Berlin 1-1 and Galatasaray tied Atletico Madrid 1-1.
