Liverpool advances to last 16 in Europa League

Bucharest, Romania (Sports Network) - Javier Mascherano answered an early goal from Unirea, and Ryan Babel and Steven Gerrard added goals, leading Liverpool to a 3-1 win Thursday and a 4-1 aggregate win in its Europa League Round of 32 series.

Liverpool won the first leg 1-0 at Anfield and overcame Joao Bruno Fernandes' 18th-minute goal in the return leg at Stadionul Steaua to advance to the last 16.

Unirea had to host the match in Bucharest because Stadionul Tineretuluim only seats 7,000 and does not meet UEFA criteria. Fernandes gave the Unirea fans who made the trip some hope less than 20 minutes into the game, but Liverpool was in control just over 10 minutes later.

Mascherano scored from 25 yards in the 30th, meaning Unirea had to score twice without allowing another goal to advance. Babel ended those chances late in the first half when he scored from close range and Gerrard added a goal in the second half.

Liverpool is joined in the last 16 by Fulham, which got an early goal by Brede Hangeland to tie defending UEFA Cup winner Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1 to advance on aggregate 3-2. Fulham won the first leg 2-1.

Everton failed to join its English rivals in the last 16, as it wasted an edge from winning the first leg 2-1 with a 3-0 loss at Sporting Lisbon. Lisbon went through on aggregate, 4-2.

Valencia was the only side that needed overtime to advance, building on a goal in the opening minute from Juan Manuel Mata with two goals from Pablo in extra time for a 3-0 win that saw the Spanish side advance on aggregate 3-1.

Spanish club Atletico Madrid also advanced Thursday, while Germany's Hamburg, Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg also secured berths in the last 16. Juventus was the lone Italian team to make the last 16.

Anderlecht, Lille, Marseille, Panathinaikos, Rubin, and Standard Liege also qualified for the last 16 on Thursday. Benfica advanced on Tuesday.
