Fulham one win from unforgettable season

Tue 11th, May 2010

Hamburg, Germany (Sports Network) - Less than two decades after playing in England's lowest division, Fulham is one win away from a European title.

Fulham dispatched of Juventus, defending champions Shakhtar Donetsk, Wolfsburg and Hamburg in the knockout stage of this season's Europa League, and battles Atletico Madrid on Wednesday at HSH Nordbank Arena in Hamburg, Germany in the final.

Fulham captain Danny Murphy believes the club has already managed a memorable season, but one more win would make it unforgettable

"The situation this year with Fulham has been remarkable in many ways," Murphy said. "As far as we're concerned, to write our names in the history books of the club, and what we've achieved already, has been special.

"To go that one step further and win it would stay with us," Murphy continued, "and everybody involved with the club, forever."

Fulham boss Roy Hodgson enters the final in great shape, with Bobby Zamora and Damien Duff returning to training Monday. Both were doubts with injuries, but their health gives Hodgson all his top options.

"I've been given no indication that they're suffering any reaction (after both trained Monday) so my hope is they'll ... be available to play," Hodgson said.

Fulham is playing in a European competition for just the second time in club history, but is the lone Premier League club to reach the final of a European event this season. Bayern Munich and Inter Milan play in the Champions League final May 22.

"Everyone's really looking forward to the challenge," Fulham's Simon Davies said on the UEFA website. "We've worked hard enough to get here, so we're really going to go and enjoy it - and just keep playing our game.

"Hopefully that will take us one step further."

"We didn't think when the Europa League started that we wanted to go in the final," Fulham's Zoltan Gera said, according to UEFA. "We just wanted to play well, that's it."

Gera and Zamora lead Fulham's attack with six goals each, while American Clint Dempsey has also provided a spark.

Defensively, center backs Brede Hangeland and Aaron Hughes are responsible for slowing down Atletico's Diego Forlan.

Forlan, who led Spain's La Liga in scoring last season, scored in both legs of the semifinals against Liverpool to put his side through to its first European final in 24 years on away goals. Atletico won the 1962 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.

Although Atletico has struggled in Spain this season, and started the year in the Champions League, it can still capture two titles. Atletico is also in the Copa del Rey final on May 10 against Sevilla.

Forlan admitted winning the titles - especially the Europa League - would help make up for a poor La Liga season, but that Fulham poses a tough challenge.

"It is my job to score goals," Forlan said, according to UEFA. "(But) the most important thing is that we perform well and win.

"We will give everything to beat them but we know it's going to be difficult."
